Jumping from one career to another can be an intimidating task. But once you spot an opportunity that you’ve always dreamed of, you can’t let it pass you by. When you’re applying for a new opportunity in a totally different field, you have to make sure that your résumé highlights your skills and not your lack of experience in your new field of interest. If you are looking to take your career in a totally new direction, here are some tips for writing a résumé for a career change:
Research the Position
Once you find a job that you’re interested in, take the time to review the job posting. If the job description is pretty vague, go online to see what people in that position generally do. It might also help to contact the human resource department if possible and ask them what they are looking for in a candidate. This research can help you discover the skills needed for the job. You can then tailor your résumé to the company’s qualifications.
Compare and Contrast
Once you have the qualifications for the new job opportunity, look at your résumé and determine what skills your current and prospective jobs have in common. Those skills are the ones that you want to include on your new résumé. Leave any irrelevant skills off of your new résumé.
Play up Your Strengths
When you write your résumé, highlight all of the skills that relate to the position you are going for. This includes education, internships, hobbies, volunteer work and any other experience that directly relate to the job.
Reiterate Your Qualifications in Your Cover Letter
When you are applying for a job, always include a cover letter. This sets the tone and lets employers know why you are qualified for the job. Introduce yourself briefly and let the reader know why you’re interested in the job. Then talk about your qualifications and indicate your willingness to learn. You might also want to point out some of the company’s core values and explain how they could help your professional development.
