In order to make it in the modern world, you have to keep up with the latest advances. Today, cell phones can do some of the same things our computers can do. We no longer need VCRs because our televisions can record our favorite shows without a tape. Our cars can now give us turn-by-turn directions to new destinations. And we can even connect with people from around the world with our computer. Technology is changing all the time and it’s imperative that you stay up-to-date to keep up with what’s going on.
The same is true with job opportunities. Positions from 20 years ago are not the same as they are today. New technologies and methodologies have changed the way that many of us do our jobs. So in order to show that you are qualified for new positions, you have to show potential employers that you are aware of the latest industry advances and trends. The best way to do this is by keeping your résumé updated.
As you apply for jobs, keep in mind that no one is looking for a candidate with outdated skills. They want fresh applicants with applicable skills. They’re not looking for someone who only has experience with outdated software or someone who hasn’t had any additional training in 10 years. Employers like to see that you are constantly developing and working to strengthen your skills.
Make sure you take the time to refresh your résumé when you change jobs, complete new training classes or earn new certifications that are relevant to your field. This way, you won’t have to scramble to do it right before you apply for a new job. Also, have a friend look over your résumé once in a while. They might be able to help you narrow your résumé down or give it a little makeover.
